Welcome to Stonington, a community of 66 households located in Arnold, Maryland, on the Magothy River. With facilities including tennis and sports courts, a private marina and beach, and several gracious community spaces, we welcome you to learn more about us!
The community of “Stonington on the Magothy” at 666 Shore Acres Drive, was once the summer estate of Judge Wilson K. Barnes, Sr., an esteemed Baltimore lawyer and American patriot.
Judge Barnes attended Harvard Law School and the University of Maryland, and graduated in 1931. He began his career during the Great Depression as a law clerk for W. Calvin Chestnut, a federal judge who eventually became his father-in-law in 1938, when he married Elizabeth Chestnut. In 1943 he began his own law firm of Anderson Barnes, Coe and King, practicing privately for 20 years.
During his working years, Judge Barnes and his family resided in Baltimore and purchased the 68-acre waterfront parcel on the Magothy River from Baltimore photographer John C. Kirkland, as a place of retreat. The Barnes “country” residence was located on the 1000 and 1002 Stonington Drive properties, overlooking the river. According to the Judge’s son, King Barnes, the Judge recruited inmates from the Baltimore jails to do landscaping and lay stonework on the estate, including several stone patios and walls, an overlook, and various stone paths and steps. The Judge loved gardens and azaleas, and planted them throughout the grounds and stonework, creating the stately setting that Stonington enjoys today.
The community of Stonington on the Magothy is special in many ways, as a stately waterside enclave with a unique American history, and as an active and dynamic Chesapeake neighborhood. It is a wonderful place to witness children at play, enjoy the bounties of nature, and develop bonds with a connected community of neighbors and friends.
